Choose what "volatility" means for you
Commercial tools publish their own volatility indexes, and their methods differ. For your own reporting, choose a definition you can explain in one sentence and recompute from raw data. Three work well for casino keyword sets:
| Measure | What it captures | Blind spot |
|---|---|---|
| Average rank displacement | How far URLs present in both checks moved | Ignores URLs that entered or left |
| Top-N URL churn | How many of the top N URLs are new since the last check | Ignores movement among URLs that stayed |
| Top-N domain overlap | How much the set of ranking domains changed | Misses changes within a domain, such as a new page from the same site |
The formulas
For one keyword, comparing check t1 with check t2 at depth N (we use N = 10):
Displacement D = sum of |rank at t2 − rank at t1| over URLs in both checks ÷ number of those URLs
Churn C = number of URLs in the top N at t2 that were not in the top N at t1 ÷ N
Overlap O = shared domains in both top-N lists ÷ distinct domains across both lists
For a keyword set, report the median of the per-keyword values and the number of keywords included. A 0 to 100 score is easier to read: multiply C by 100, or use (1 − O) × 100 for domain change. Say which one you used.
Worked example (synthetic)
One demo keyword, top five results on two days. The URLs are placeholders.
| Rank | Check 1 | Check 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | a.example/guide | a.example/guide |
| 2 | b.example/review | c.example/list |
| 3 | c.example/list | b.example/review |
| 4 | d.example/news | e.example/compare |
| 5 | f.example/faq | d.example/news |
- Displacement: four URLs appear in both checks. Their moves are 0, 1, 1 and 1, so D = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 places.
- Churn (N = 5): one URL (e.compare) is new, so C = 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2, or 20 on a 0 to 100 scale.
- Domain overlap: four shared domains out of six distinct ones, so O = 0.67 and domain change is 33.
The same day can look calm (0.75 places) or busy (33) depending on the formula. That is why the formula must travel with the number.
Keep noise out of the score
- Same conditions every time: market, location level, device, language, depth, logged-out session and similar time of day. Google says results can vary by data center, so expect some movement even when nothing changed.
- Same keyword set: a changed cohort changes the score.
- Separate SERP features from blue links. If an AI Overview or a video block appears, the organic results below it can shift without any ranking change. Track features separately, as described in our SERP feature guide.
- Watch casino-specific churn. Gambling queries attract spam and short-lived domains. Google's spam policies cite casino examples for site reputation abuse and expired domain abuse. Sudden churn may reflect spam entering and leaving rather than a ranking change for legitimate sites.
Annotate Google updates, carefully
The Google Search Status Dashboard listed these ranking updates (start dates, US Pacific time):
| Year | Core updates (start) | Spam updates (start) |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | March 5, August 15, November 11, December 12 | March 5, June 20, December 19 |
| 2025 | March 13, June 30, December 11 | August 26 |
| 2026 | March 27, May 21 | March 24, June 24, August 18, September 24 |
An annotation shows timing, not cause. Google's own guide to traffic drops lists several other causes, including technical issues, security issues, seasonality and site moves, and says that after an algorithmic change "there might not be anything fundamentally wrong with your content". Volatility during a sporting event or a regulatory change can be just as large.
Report it responsibly
- Print the formula, depth, keyword count and conditions under the chart.
- Show the median and the spread, not only an average.
- Name winners and losers only when you can show the underlying ranks, and avoid naming operators from a small sample.
- Label any synthetic or modeled values clearly, as we do in our terminal demo.
Questions
Is there an official Google volatility score?
No. Google confirms named updates on its Search Status Dashboard but publishes no volatility index. Third-party indexes each use their own method, so compare them with care.
Which volatility formula should a casino team use?
Top-10 URL churn is the easiest to explain to stakeholders, and average displacement is better for spotting small reshuffles. Many teams report both, with the formula printed under the chart.
Does high volatility mean we lost rankings?
Not necessarily. Volatility measures how much the page changed, including changes that helped you or did not affect you. Check your own positions and Search Console clicks for the same period.
