Four principles

1. Fix the conditions. Keyword set, location, device, language and depth are part of the measurement. Google says location, language, device and even the responding data center change results.
2. Know your source. Search Console gives your own site's real average position. Third-party rank data is a sample; ask providers how they collect it, because Google's spam policies treat automated rank-checking queries as machine-generated traffic.
3. Report coverage with every average. Keywords not found within the checked depth are unknown, not position 101.
4. Separate devices and markets. One blended average hides the device and market that actually changed.

Mobile versus desktop

Track the same keyword set on both devices as two series. Google says results show "the best results based on your screen type, like mobile or desktop", and layouts differ: features such as breadcrumbs now show on desktop only. Compare the two series with the same formula and say which device drives most of your Search Console clicks before deciding which one to optimize for. Until you hold a real dataset, do not publish device comparisons as findings; our terminal demo shows the format with synthetic numbers.

Ranking stability over time

Stability is the opposite face of volatility. For a keyword set, define a window (for example four weekly checks) and report:

• the share of keywords whose position stayed within two places across the window;
• the median absolute weekly movement;
• keywords that entered or left the checked depth, listed by name.

Treat missing checks as gaps, not as zeros. The volatility guide gives the formulas.
