Measure the page as well as the position

For each keyword in a set, record the result types in the top ten (operators, affiliates, media, regulators, others) and the features present. Over time this shows whether the page itself is changing, for example more space taken by an AI Overview, which affects clicks even when your position holds. Use Google's own feature names from its Visual Elements gallery so your categories match the documentation.

Ranking changes during Google updates

Google confirms core and spam updates on its Search Status Dashboard. Between January 2024 and October 2026 it listed nine core updates and eight spam updates. Use them as annotations, with three cautions:

• Correlation is not cause. Google's traffic-drop guide lists other causes, including technical issues, security issues, seasonality and site moves.
• Updates take days or weeks to roll out. Compare full weeks before the start and after the rollout ends, not single days.
• Spam updates can reshuffle casino results sharply. Google's spam policies use casino examples for site reputation abuse and expired domain abuse, so removals of spam can move legitimate sites up without any change on their side.
