Market protocol · Great Britain

United Kingdom SERP Research Protocol

Great Britain has a national licensing regime for remote gambling, which makes it the simplest of our four markets to sample: one country-level location, English (en-GB) queries, and a public register to check every brand that ranks. Keep Northern Ireland separate, because the Gambling Commission does not regulate gambling there.

The Gambling Commission's functions are set out in the Gambling Act 2005, as amended by the Gambling (Licensing and Advertising) Act 2014. Under the 2014 changes, "an operator will need a licence from the Gambling Commission if their gambling facilities are used in Great Britain", whether or not its servers are in the country. The minimum age is 18 in most cases, including online.

Northern Ireland is different. The Commission says it "does not regulate the gambling activity and has no powers of prosecution in Northern Ireland", apart from the National Lottery. Results for a Belfast location can also mix with results aimed at the Republic of Ireland. Sample Northern Ireland as its own series, or leave it out and say so.

Rule changes to annotate (2025 to 2026)

Gambling Commission changes relevant to casino content and search, checked October 26, 2026
DateChange
April 9, 2025Online slots stake limit of £5 per spin for adults
May 21, 2025£2 per spin for adults aged 18 to 24
January 19, 2026Bonus wagering requirements capped at 10 times; mixed-product promotions banned
End of September 2026Second phase of deposit limit requirements, extended from June 30, 2026

Changes like these alter what operators and affiliates publish, for example bonus pages rewritten after the 10 times cap. Expect content churn in results for bonus-related queries around those dates, and annotate your charts.

Sampling protocol

  1. Location: Great Britain at country level. If you test cities, use at least two (for example London and Manchester) and report them separately.
  2. Language: English, en-GB interface.
  3. Devices: mobile and desktop as separate series.
  4. Keyword groups: casino, slots, live casino, sportsbook, poker, brand, informational (rules, odds explained), and policy context (safer gambling, license checks).
  5. Depth: top 20, the same every check.
  6. Cadence: weekly, with daily data held for investigation; avoid comparing major football weeks with quiet weeks.

Check every brand against the register

The Commission's Public Register "provides information on the businesses and individuals licensed by the Gambling Commission". For each domain in your competitor set, record whether the operating business appears on it. Label results from unlicensed operators in your data rather than dropping them; a rising share of unlicensed results is itself a finding worth reporting.

Informational UK gambling queries often show AI Overviews and People also ask; sportsbook queries show top stories around fixtures. Track them with the list in our SERP feature guide, by device.

Safer gambling

The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is free on 0808 8020 133 and open 24 hours a day. Pages in your keyword set that answer safer-gambling queries should show it.

Questions

Should UK samples include Northern Ireland?

Only as a separate series. The Gambling Commission does not regulate gambling activity in Northern Ireland, and results there can mix with Republic of Ireland content.

How do I know if a ranking casino is licensed in Great Britain?

Search the Gambling Commission's Public Register for the operating business. Record the result in your competitor set and label unlicensed domains.

Which 2026 changes affect UK casino search results?

The 10 times wagering cap and mixed-product promotion ban from January 19, 2026 changed bonus content, and new deposit limit requirements took effect by the end of September 2026. Annotate both on your charts.
