United States SERP Research Protocol

There is no single US casino results page. Gambling law is set state by state: online casino is live in only seven states, sports betting is legal in many more, and each state has its own regulator and licensed brands. Sample by state, label unregulated states clearly, and never pool them into one national average.

The American Gaming Association's State of the States 2026 refers to "the seven states with lawful online casinos". From state sources and that report, the live states are Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia. Two launches are confirmed on regulator pages we checked: Michigan ("Online gaming and sports betting are now live in Michigan", January 22, 2021) and Connecticut (opened in October 2021 for adults 21 and older). Pennsylvania's regulator reports its first iGaming site launched in July 2019.

Maine's Legislature passed LD 1164, which "authorizes each federally recognized Indian nation, tribe or band in this State to operate Internet gaming"; it became law in January 2026. Trade press reported in October 2026 that the state regulator expected a launch in early 2027, so treat Maine as pre-launch.

Sports betting is far wider. The AGA says it "is legal in 38 states and Washington, D.C." Some trackers count 39, depending on how recent launches and tribal-only states are counted.

Sampling protocol

  1. Location: one sample per state, using a major city in the state. Never use a national US location for casino queries.
  2. State classes: (a) online casino and sports betting legal, (b) sports betting only, (c) neither. Report each class separately.
  3. Language: English; add Spanish cohorts where your audience searches in Spanish.
  4. Devices: mobile and desktop as separate series.
  5. Keyword groups: online casino, slots, live dealer, sportsbook, daily fantasy where relevant, brand, informational and policy context.
  6. Calendar: annotate NFL, college football, NBA and March tournament periods; sportsbook results change sharply around them.

Label non-regulated states

In states without legal online casino, results for casino queries often include sweepstakes casinos, social casinos and offshore sites. Measure them if your research needs it, but label the sample "non-regulated state" and keep unlicensed operators out of competitor recommendations. Each state regulator publishes its own list of licensed operators; check brands against the list for the state you sampled.

Safer gambling and helplines

The National Council on Problem Gambling "adopted 1-800-MY-RESET as the new National Problem Gambling Helpline number" on January 29, 2026, and says its older number, 1-800-522-4700, "will remain active". Several state rules name 1-800-GAMBLER in required advertising messages, so content teams should use the number each state requires and check it each quarter.

Questions

Can I track US casino rankings with one national location?

No. Online casino is legal in only seven states, each with its own licensed brands. A national location mixes regulated and unregulated results and hides state-level differences.

Is online casino legal in Maine?

Maine legalized tribal online casino through LD 1164, which became law in January 2026, but it had not launched as of October 2026. Treat it as pre-launch in your samples.

Which helpline number should US pages show?

The number each state requires. Nationally, NCPG's helpline is 1-800-MY-RESET, adopted January 29, 2026, while some state rules name 1-800-GAMBLER in advertising messages.
